Long QT Vulnerability in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (2013-2014)

Project Summary

Sudden cardiac death represents the third leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurs in infants less than one year old with unexpected death without known causes of death. The goal of this proposal aims to identify markers to aid early identification of the congenital condition(s), which makes the infants susceptible to cardiac arrhythmias. If successful, the results obtained are of translational significance and could better define prevention strategies for SIDS. Most kids that collapse on the field die from Long QT Syndrome; this study investigating the molecular basis for Long QT Vulnerability could help to identify ways to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in children.
