Our Story

Brian & Francie

On August 11, 2005, we had our first child...

a beautiful baby boy named Joshua Bennett Paul. We thought we were having a healthy baby, four hours after he was born, doctors rushed in to tell us that something was severely wrong with him, that he was ashen from when he was born, that he was breathing below 50% (- when a healthy newborn breathes at 100%) and that he was on life support. Our baby was rushed from the local hospital where he was born to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Joshua was diagnosed with Severe Complex Congenital Heart Disease.

Like many parents in our position, we felt helpless, became angry and considered litigation as a course of action.

After meeting with high-profile medical malpractice attorneys, we decided this route was not for us. In the elevator on the way out of one attorney’s office, we called Brian’s corporate attorney to find out how to start a public charity.

After Joshua’s 2nd open heart surgery when he was 3 months old, his Pediatric Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon told us ‘that there was a desperate need to fund heart defect research, that young, hungry scientists were being turned down for Government funding because they didn’t have enough funds to beef up their groundbreaking studies and that babies and children were dying because of the lack of research to save them’…which is where we come in, to provide the seed money for it all.

Someone had raised funds for research for us and our baby was given the greatest chance. We can only dream for what 10 years from now will be with miraculous therapeutics, groundbreaking discoveries and revolutionary advancements in the field of heart disease made through this vital research. We felt changing the future of science and medicine into heart disease so that there is hope for what can be, would be a much more important and life-saving way for us to focus our greatest efforts.
